6 tips & tricks on how to create and remember passwords
1. Use Numbers Or Special Characters To Create A Strong Password
Using a symbol or character associated with an account you are creating, is a great trick to use when creating a complex password. For example, using an @ symbol for your email or a $, %, or # symbol for your online banking password. Try to be strategic and unpredictable with your character placement, incorporating a symbol in the middle of your word, phrase, or quote could be the final ingredient to your formula.
2. Use A Mnemonic Device
For those who are unaware, a mnemonic device, or memory device is a learning tool that is intended to assist the memory in retrieving cues or to make use of elaborate coding in any given way to access stored information or to retrieve sensitive data. For example, Roy G. Biv is a mnemonic device used to help one recall the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.
3. Never Use Identifiable Information In Your Password
Using personal information for your online passwords could potentially have dire consequences if your account were to ever get breached. For example, if you use your street address for an email password and an attacker successfully breaches the account, they won’t just be able to track your online communication but would also know where you live. As a general rule, we strongly suggest that you NEVER use personal information for any of your online business, private, or related accounts.

A password management system is a great tool to use if you have trouble remembering all of your online passwords. Whatever you decide to use make sure it is something memorable. Always keep in mind that your phrase or quote should be around 24 to 30 letters. Every additional character you add substantially reduces the probability of a cyber attacker guessing it.
6. Use A Multi-Factor Authentication Tool Or Two-Source Verification (TSV)
Lastly, using a multi-factor authentication tool will help to further protect yourself from any hacks or data breaches. For those who aren’t familiar, a multi-factor authentication tool is a verification system designed to protect a user’s identity by making he or she present two or more pieces of evidence to validate their identity. A similar mechanism that we strongly encourage you to use is a two-source verification tool (TSV). A TSV is another authentication-type tool used to validate a user’s identity for outside access. For example, if you are trying to access your business email account from an external source, a TSV will send a code to the source you are trying to access it from and request that you provide that code in order to access the related account you are attempting to enter.
